How do you teach children about Nature with DUPLO?

It's spring. Bees are starting to buzz again and flowers are blooming. We love it.

And for everyone who works at LEGOĀ® DUPLOĀ®, this always feels like the perfect time to encourage personal growth in the kids who play with our sets. We do this, for example, by teaching them about the nature around them and (of course) how they can protect it.

That's why many of the sets we released at the beginning of 2023 have sustainability as a theme.

We take you on the same educational journey as your children, while teaching children about nature in the most fun way!

Learning about natural resources

You are never too young to learn the importance of protecting nature and maintaining ecological balance through choices in our daily lives.

These choices can include everything from our clothes to our belongings and especially our food.

It may seem that way when we are kids, but the food in the supermarket doesn't just appear there.

It's not surprising that many of us didn't grow up with an understanding of the food chain. Of course, products don't just appear. But what else were we to think?

But as we move towards a more sustainable future as a society, it's vital that we get better at teaching children about sustainability and how the world works. Of course, we cannot expect children at this age to know everything about the dynamics in the food chain (we'll just wait until they are 4).

But kids can start learning where their food comes from with our My First Growing Carrot educational toy. By guiding them as they play with the sun and rain cloud stones, you can practice learning about nature. Show what organic food needs to grow as you give the brick-built carrot just the right amount of sun, rain and water from the watering can.

You might have to tell them that real carrots don't have little faces...

Harvest time

On to the next phase of our journey from farm to table... and it involves a big tractor (because what kid doesn't love tractors?!).

Just like before, My First Fruit and Vegetable Tractor toy teaches children the basics of growing fruit and vegetables, but also about farmers and the crucial role they play in our society.

This all helps develop children's role-play skills, not to mention their motor skills, as they inevitably run around your house for hours with the steerable tractor and three trailers!

To the market!

With our Biomarkt set, children can now visualize the journey their food takes after their fruit and vegetables are grown from the ground up and learn about the intersections between nature and our society, hopefully giving children a greater understanding of both.

And of course it's fun. That always helps.

Biodiversity

The word 'biodiversity' has only been used since the 1980s ā€“ and that's actually not that long ago. But what it lacks in age, it makes up for in importance.

Bees are one of the most important creatures on earth - and not just because of the delicious honey they make (although it helps...). Like other pollinating insects, we rely on these planthoppers to create the biodiversity that grows the food we eat. Their importance cannot be overstated and it's helpful to have toys that get those conversations going.

Help ladybugs and bees fly to different types of plants, help the plants grow - and keep the pollinators happy. Or experiment with the weatherstones to see what effect it might have on the fruits.

As with all these sets, kids don't learn these big, important concepts through our toys alone. You are a teacher and active play partner. And that's how it should be, because we know that children learn best when they are having fun.

And what's more fun than playing with your family? And what playtime is more valuable than playtime that cultivates a better future for them?
