10 Things to Discover in the X-Men Mansion

X-Men is about the lives of mutants who have a genetic defect – the X-gene – that gives them superpowers. The X-Men appear in comics, movies, animated series and more.

Now they are part of a new LEGOŸ set based on the X-Mansion, the headquarters of the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning.

Here you can read everything there is to know about the LEGO Marvel X-Men: The X-Mansion set.

1. The set was designed by two X-Men superfans

LEGO designers Justin Ramsden and Mark Tranter were part of the team responsible for the set and for both of them it was a dream come true.

“I've been a fan of Marvel comics for almost my entire life,” Mark says, as Justin nods in agreement.

“When I was young, X-Men: The Animated Series was a crucial part of my Saturday morning routine,” he adds. “I would watch cartoons and become obsessed with this universe.”

2. The set is largely based on a classic series

"The set is primarily based on the animated series, which later spawned X-Men '97 as an homage," Justin said, referring to the set's signature color palette that will instantly transport nostalgic fans back to the '90s.

“We worked closely with the team at Marvel to add references to the entire X-Men universe, both the comics and the films,” he continues.

3. The set features classic rooms and locations

Choosing which rooms to include in a set like this isn't easy, and the designers admit that sometimes it was tough to make decisions.

“Unfortunately we couldn't include them all, but there are still quite a few,” laughs Mark.

The top floor features Professor X's lab, a bedroom with Wolverine's bed, and a medical lab. The ground floor features a lobby, classroom, library, and the Danger Room training facility.

4. It is a very interactive set

The set is sure to provide hours of role-play fun, thanks to interactive features such as sliding walls and doors and a roof that can be destroyed at the flip of a switch.

“We had a lot of fun with it and tried to make it playful,” Justin says.

5. There are MANY hidden surprises

Super fans will notice quite a few references throughout the set.

“There are 46 stickers, so that's at least 46 nods to different X-Men universes,” Mark explains.

It would take too long to list them all, but highlights include a beach calendar, hidden chewing gum and a certain character lying on a bed staring at a photograph.

6. The design team worked directly with Marvel

"We worked really closely with Marvel to decide what the set would look like," Justin says. "They gave us a lot of reference material because there are a lot of different ways the mansion is represented. So we had a lot of design directions to go in."

7. You get 10 X-Men minifigures with it

The characters are an integral part of the X-Men universe and you get a lot of them in this set: Professor X, Wolverine, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Storm, Gambit, Rogue, Iceman, Bishop and Magneto. For some of them it is the first time that we have made a minifigure of them.

As with the rooms, with so many historical clothes and outfits, it wasn't easy to choose the final looks.

"For Wolverine, we went with yellow and black," Mark says. "That's his most iconic look. But when it was Bishop or Iceman, for example, I tried to keep the comics in mind while keeping the character as recognizable as possible. It's just about finding a good balance, because you don't want it to be too vague."

8. It's the largest LEGOÂź X-Men set to date

With a whopping 3,093 pieces, this is our largest X-Men set ever. The finished model measures over 10.5” (27cm) high, 15.5” (40cm) wide and 9.8” (25cm) deep, making it perfect for play or simply displaying anywhere.

9. It's the latest modular superhero set

“We wanted the set to fit into our modular superhero alley, alongside buildings like the Sanctum Sanctorum, the Daily Bugle and the Avengers Tower.”

Whether you already have these sets at home or are just starting your collection, the LEGOÂź Marvel X-Men: X-Mansion set is the perfect fit.

10. The set will undoubtedly be very popular with X-Men fans

The X-Men are incredibly popular all over the world, so we asked Justin and Mark if they have any ideas why that is.

"It appeals to a different type of audience," Justin replies. "They're a bit outside of society, but they still come together and make a great team."

Mark agrees and even thinks it's LEGOŸ design team shares some of those traits. "Because the heroes always work together as a team, they are one big family. They always work together to get things done. Just like us!"
