LEGO Wednesday: Build The Adams Family's "Thing"

While we don’t normally watch supernatural TV shows, we’ve been binge-watching Wednesday in 2022 and thoroughly enjoying it. When the new LEGO Wednesday sets were announced last month, we wanted to build something that represented a bit of the show, so when LEGO offered to send something spooky our way, I didn’t hesitate to sign up!

Building the Wednesday sets

As soon as they arrived on my doorstep, I realized I was going to get to build the entire theme ! In all my years of building, I've only built one BrickHeadz, so of course I started with LEGO 40750 Wednesday & Enid . They both look fantastic next to their minidoll counterparts that I swiped from the playset.

I built LEGO 76781 Wednesday & Enid's Dorm Room next, which has some pretty cool features! Two little handles on the side of the models reveal two themed drawers for both Wednesday and Enid, plus a couple of minidolls inside wearing their formal attire for the Rave'n Ball (an equivalent of a homecoming dance at Nevermore Academy on the show).

My favorite new element for the whole of 2024 is the Gargoyles, they are really cute. I hope they are available in bulk soon!

Last but not least, we have 76780 Wednesday Addams Figure left over. There are two look options to build: her school uniform or her Rave'n dress, with some new translucent black 1x1 leaves for detail. Talk about another piece I want in bulk!

The display includes her typewriter, her handy companion Thing, a crystal ball, and the gravestone of her pet Nero. Just like in the Dorm Room, there are two hidden drawers with space for the extra pieces, so you can build the version you most want to display.

Versions of Wednesday

Our titular character, Wednesday, comes in a ton of different styles. The new Wicked-themed LEGO sets introduced a new style and scale for LEGO figures that feature movable arms and a doll head. Minifigures have captured the hearts of LEGO fans for decades, but these new chibi-style figures are a welcome addition. I’d love to see Star Wars characters like these…

Which one is your favorite?

And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the final character in the sets, Thing. Wednesday’s loyal but troublesome companion on the show is the handy Thing, a sentient right hand. Where is his body? Who was he? No one knows, but our fellow nerds at New Elementary know where he fits into the LEGO system.

Is the thing an animal? A person? I have no idea where to sort it…

I can't wait to see what the Bionicle builders will do with this new Thing.

Behold, Thing!

Thing from Wednesday

I know I promised something creepy, and here at BrickNerd we like to go beyond the normal review, so I decided to take on a challenge. I'm known for making Thing-like creations, so I decided to build a big Thing! Yes, I would be the first to build a UCS Thing!

The first step was to look up what parts are in light nougat. According to BrickLink there are about 2,050 different parts. That seems like a lot, but when you subtract all the minifigures/minidolls/animals and decorated parts, you don't have many options left. Light nougat has only recently been released with character skin tones, so it was a challenge to build with what was left.

The clips were actually the most limiting factor, as there aren't many elements available in the color that have a certain functionality. Luckily, the 10280 Flower Bouquet came in handy with some clips, rods, and curved elements that helped complete the look.

It's almost as big as my hand, although it's not as mobile…

Although Thing's hand is a little loose compared to my hand, especially at the thumb, the size and shape are actually quite decent. The hand is also surprisingly strong and could even hold up a pedestal I made with the gargoyles and the buildable Wednesday figure!

All that's left to do is hide the hand in a bucket of candy for unsuspecting trick-or-treaters and enjoy their reactions! Maybe next year I'll motorize it and see if I can make it snap shut based on movement to really scare them. More to come from UCS Thing!
