LEGO and 2TTOYS about their efforts for a better environment

LEGO and the environment

LEGO strives to have a positive impact on society and the planet, which our children will inherit, and it is this focus on future generations that drives the work. LEGO believes that they have a responsibility to minimize the environmental impact of their activities.

LEGO and the environment

Our ambition for sustainable materials

LEGO's ambition is to make LEGO bricks from sustainable sources by 2030 without compromising on quality or safety. This means that LEGO has to invent completely new materials. A sustainable material must be produced responsibly, using renewable or recycled sources, generate little or no waste, use sustainable chemistry and be fully recyclable at the end of its life. All this while LEGO meets the high requirements for safety, quality and sustainability.

LEGO and the environment

Sustainable packaging

LEGO bricks are usually reused, passed on and delivered, but LEGO boxes and other packaging are often quickly thrown away. Some of the packaging contains single-use plastic that is not sustainable or in some cases recyclable, so LEGO is taking urgent action to make all packaging sustainable by 2025.

Lego and the environment

Playing with paper packaging

As the next step on our journey towards 100% sustainable packaging, LEGO will begin phasing out single-use plastic bags used in LEGO boxes to package the loose bricks. Several prototypes made from different sustainable materials have been tested so far with hundreds of parents and children. From 2021, recyclable paper bags certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®C117818) will be tested in boxes. If successful, the new bags will be phased in over a period of four years, starting in 2021.

SUSTAINABLY PRODUCED

In 2020, LEGO also phased out plastic carrier bags in LEGO® stores and replaced them with bags made from sustainably produced paper. 2TTOYS also uses paper LEGO bags, which you can buy. To meet 2TTOYS' wish to also be environmentally friendly, we do not supply a carrying bag as standard. After all, a paper bag also has to be made, which causes pollution.

LEGO and the environment

Circularity inspires

The LEGO system in the game supports the principles of circular design - a product made from high-quality materials that can be used and reused - and the quality, durability, safety and consistency of LEGO bricks means they are often reused, passed on or passed on .

In 2020, LEGO joined the Ellen MacArthur Foundation network as part of efforts to design more 'circular' products and packaging and explore new business models.

LEGO and 2TTOYS remain 100% renewable energy balanced, thanks to investments in offshore wind by LEGO's parent company KIRKBI A/S and investments in on-site renewable energy by the LEGO Group. 2TTOYS uses environmentally friendly LED lighting in the store. In addition, we ask the carriers we use to transport our goods (pallets, containers) for environmentally friendly trucks and vans. Our house carrier Holweg Cargo Service only uses vehicles with the highest possible environmental quality and even has an IVECO Stralis tractor that runs on natural gas.

2TTOYS itself will eventually invest in its own vehicles that run on electricity. You often see the LEGO van at the 2TTOYS store, even after closing time. That's because we usually choose to come to the store by bike.

LEGO and the Environment

We strive to reduce the carbon impact of making, transporting and selling LEGO products. Our total CO2 emissions, including those produced by our supply chain, were 1.15 million tonnes of CO2 (CO2e) in 2019. The total CO2 count for 2020 will be available in the third quarter of 2021. Science Based Target

In December 2020, we became the first major toy company to announce a Science Based Target, which commits us to reducing our absolute CO2 emissions by 37% by 2032. This includes emissions from our own operations, which represent approximately 10% of total emissions and includes energy use in our owned and operated stores, our factories, offices and from our supply chain, which represents almost 90% of emissions, including areas such as raw materials and distribution. The target has been endorsed by the Science Based Target initiative as consistent with the levels needed to keep global warming below 1.5°C, the most ambitious goal of the Paris Agreement. No waste to landfill

We are committed to zero waste, meaning that by 2025 no waste from any owned or operated LEGO factory, office or store will be sent to landfill. We will also eliminate single-use plastics from our operations by the end of 2022. We currently recycle 91% of all waste, including 100% of plastic waste from our molding machines. In 2020, 381 tons of waste went to landfill. Our journey towards our environmental sustainability goals
Our ambitions within sustainable materials are bold and require the invention of completely new materials! We are moving towards our 2030 target and making progress on all our environmental sustainability ambitions; materials, packaging, CO2 efficiency and zero waste, by joining forces with children, our employees, experts and NGOs.
