The hygge season is just around the corner

The LEGO Group's headquarters are located in the same place where our founder founded his carpentry workshop for more than 90 years: in the small village of Billund, in also small Denmark.

And although we Danes are not the biggest optimists, we actually have it pretty good here. There are lots of bikes here, lots of pastries and a significant supply of LEGO bricks...

But then there is also the sun. Every year she does her best to spoil everyone's mood by disappearing for almost the entire winter.

Fortunately, we have found an efficient solution to defend ourselves against the terribly rude way our weather has been behaving for 3 months. And that is hygge .

What is hygge?

Hygge is one of those Danish concepts that Danes will happily tell you "there's actually no direct translation." You can perhaps best describe it as 'fun', but it actually means a lot more than that.

It is the kind of conviviality that we actively seek, that we consciously create and that aims to make us happier. And it's usually in the little things.

Meik Wiking, author of The Little Book of Hygge (so he knows everything about it...), describes it as follows:

“Hygge is the feeling of being at home. A feeling that you are safe, that you are shielded from the world and that you can take off your mask and be vulnerable. You can talk endlessly about the small or big things in life, just being comfortable with each other without having to say anything, or just being alone and enjoying a cup of tea.”

Hygge is a fire and warm socks. It's like watching your favorite movie for the umpteenth time on a lazy Sunday with your pet on your lap.

Oh, and candles of course. If you have a very short one If you want to describe hygge, it really just comes down to a lot of candles...

Does hygge really work?

Well, Denmark is statistically speaking one of the happiest countries in the world. And on an anecdotal level that is also the case.

When it's stormy outside, there's nothing more cozy than putting on a record at home and reading a book or building a LEGO set.

And yes, building with LEGO bricks is also completely hygge. And no, we don't just say that. Just like reading, cooking or doing a puzzle, these are productive activities that evoke the pleasure that characterizes hygge. It's a kind of satisfaction you can never get from staring at a screen all the time...

But of course hygge is about more than just things.

As Meik Wiking emphasizes, the best way to create hygge is to "be with the people you love" and make the most of the time you spend together.

Building hygge with LEGO® DUPLO®

That's why we've come up with some fun LEGO DUPLO activities for you and your little one, to provide your next playtime with a good dose of hygge.

First and foremost, find a nice place where you feel cozy, happy, warm and safe. If that's a gigantic blanket fort for you, feel free to go all out. Then it's time to get out the LEGO DUPLO bricks!

Since hygge also includes a cozy fireplace, we thought it would be appropriate to opt for a tree-building challenge.

Start by encouraging your little one to build a tree with as few blocks as possible, as shown above under Easy Build.

And once they've gained confidence in their creative skills, you can show them how to add elements to create figures they didn't even know they could build with LEGO bricks, like fruit or birds!

This process of making the models increasingly complex is perfect for many other builds, especially boats.

These cute boats are also a great way to get them moving and exploring every corner of your cozy hideaway as you cross the seven seas together. Rain or storm outside is a real bonus!

Finally, there is also a lot to be said about nature and hygge. Although hygge is usually associated with indoors, a love of nature is also an important part of hygge. Whether it concerns houseplants in the house, taking a walk in the woods or simply enjoying the view from your window. To celebrate nature during our fun LEGO DUPLO hygge activities, we want you and your loved ones to build some birds! (Who can make the most colorful plumage?)

Whatever you build, you'll see them push the boundaries of their imagination with each new technique they learn. And as you help them build and develop their skills, you can be sure that there is no better way to share beautiful moments together.

Because that is ultimately what hygge is all about.
