LEGO Star Wars will be 25 years old in 2025
Lego Star Wars (stylized as LEGO Star Wars) is a Lego-themed and multimedia franchise revolving around the Star Wars media franchise created by George Lucas. The theme includes, in addition to more than 910 LEGO building toy sets and 1,328 Lego minifigures, a video game series of the same name with six games, several computer-animated short films and TV series.
Originally only licensed from 1999 to 2008, The Lego Group extended the license with Lucasfilm, first until 2011, then until 2016, then again until 2022, and then again until 2032.
Lego Star Wars is based on the Star Wars saga and franchise. The product line focuses directly on the Star Wars characters from the films and TV series, with the exception of a few special characters.
Lego Star Wars designers have revealed how they have "changed the strategy" to get popular minifigures into cheaper and more accessible sets. Jens Kronvold Frederiksen, Creative Lead of Lego Star Wars, explained: "We have changed our strategy a bit over the years" , and continued: "Whereas in the past we often kept some - especially the most important ones - for the higher prices. We now think that young kids, perhaps newcomers to Star Wars, will want to get into it.”
The designers revealed the Force Ghost minifigures as a result of changes to the company's transparent plastic. Creative Lead Jens Kronvold Frederiksen: “The reason for not doing this was that the minifigures are made of many different types of plastic, because they need to have different capabilities and characteristics,” explains Design Director Michael Lee Stockwell. "Some have to be flexible, some have to use coupling force and all that," and continued, "So, for example, the hands are made of a different material than the heads."
Stockwell explained that coming up with playsets based on new shows and movies is trickier than creating vehicles. Referring to a Lego set based on The Mandalorian, Stockwell explained: "We were interested in [the Armourer's Forge] from the first season, but we didn't know enough about the context" , and continued: "We didn't know. Enough of what happened around this. That's one of the main differences between designing a ship and a playset like this, because sometimes it's easier to understand a ship."
The designers explained that the Mandalorian Starfighter (set number: LEGO 75316 ) is a good example of how they decide which sets to produce. Frederiksen explained, "If it's something that's shown in more places, then there's a good chance it's popular," and continued, "We did the same thing when making stuff from The Clone War s. We always thought that the best set of [vehicles] was both from the prequel films, but also from The Clone Wars, [because] we make more people happy."
The designers explained the minifigure design process and how they feel responsible for their accuracy. Lego Star Wars designer Madison O'Neil explained , "Part of that is just trying to fit these details in. The leg print, the arm print, wherever we can, that's something new that we're starting to be able to do a little bit with. a little more of that is great to have the capacity to do that. We work within the parameters that we have within the business that everyone has, and we just try to do the very best that we can."
LEGO STARWARS BUILDING SETS
According to the official Lego database BrickLink, The LEGO Group hasreleased a total of 910 Lego sets and promotional polybags and 1,386 minifigures as part of the LEGO Star Wars theme through 2023.
LEGO STARWARS MINIFIGURES
Some minifigures appear repeatedly in multiple LEGO sets, while others can be very rare, greatly increasing their resale value. Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader are the most prominent minifigures, while battle droids are, by number, one of the most common minifigures in all of Lego. The first Lego Star Wars minifigures ever released were Luke Skywalker and Ben Kenobi from LEGO 7110 "Landspeeder". Tan OOM Battleroids are the first LEGO Star Wars minifigure by production code (sw0001a) and have only four different unique designs, all of which are just differently oriented arms and an extra back plate. LEGO changed the skin color from yellow to a more natural skin color between 2003 and 2004, and in 2005 the yellow skin color was discontinued in the LEGO Star Wars line. In 2019, the number of LEGO Star Wars minifigures exceeded 1,000, with Battlefront II protagonist Iden Versio carrying the code sw1000.
LEGO STARWARS CONSTRUCTION SETS
The first few sets based on the original trilogy were released in 1999, coinciding with the release of The Phantom Menace . The first wave of Lego Star Wars sets included model LEGO 7140, an X-wing fighter . Sets based on the Star Wars prequel trilogy (Episodes I through III) would follow, starting with Episode I - The Phantom Menace. As each new film in the prequel trilogy approached its release date, LEGO released new models of ships and scenes in those films, as well as additional sets from the original trilogy. Lego also produced models based on Clone Wars, The Clone Wars , The Old Republic , The Force Unleashed , Rebels , The Force Awakens , Battlefront , Rogue One , The Last Jedi , Solo , Resistance , The Mandalorian , The Rise of Skywalker , The Bad Batch , The Book of Boba Fett , Obi-Wan Kenobi , Star Wars: Andor , Ahsoka and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Sets based on Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures, Galaxy's Edge and The Freemaker Adventures have also been produced.
In 2022, The Lego Group announced that the Lego Star Wars theme will continue until 2032.
Ultimate Collector Series (UCS) sets
In addition to the regular minifigure scale sets, Lego has released 37 sets for the Ultimate Collector Series. These models are often significantly larger, more detailed, and more intended for display purposes than other sets. They also often cost more than regular Lego sets. Many of them are equipped with an information board and often a display stand. The largest of these is LEGO 75192 , the 2017 UCS version of the Millennium Falcon, complete with ten minifigures. At 7,541 pieces, it is the largest Lego Star Wars set ever released; and the fifth largest set of any collection ever released commercially. On June 5, 2015, a sealed box of the older 2007 Millennium Falcon Lego set (#10179) was auctioned at online auction house Catawiki for €. 5,000 euros (US$5556.5 at the time), making it the most expensive Lego set ever. In 2021, AT-AT (set number: LEGO 75313) was released on November 26, 2021. In 2022, Luke Skywalker's Landspeeder (set number: LEGO 75341 ) was released on May 1, 2022. The Razor Crest (set number: LEGO 75331 ) was released on October 3, 2022 In 2023, X-wing Starfighter (set number: LEGO 75355 ) was released on May 1, 2023. In September 2023, the Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser (set number: LEGO 75367 ) was released on October 1, 2023.
Master Builder Series (MBS) sets
With a similar complexity to the Ultimate Collector Series sets, sets under the Master Builder Series are built for the purpose of play, with numerous play features, functions and interior details compared to the UCS, which are more for display purposes. The first set from the MBS is the LEGO 75222 Betrayal at Cloud City , which was released in 2018. In 2020, # LEGO 75290 Mos Eisley Cantina was released as the largest MBS set with over 3,000 parts and 21 minifigures.
The Helmet Collection sets
In 2020, Lego released three brick-built helmets of select iconic characters from the Star Wars universe. They are LEGO 75277 Boba Fett , LEGO 75276 Stormtrooper and LEGO 75274 TIE Fighter Pilot . Intended for display, nameplates of the helmets' characters are included. In March 2021, Lego announced that it will release the LEGO 75304 Darth Vader and LEGO 75305 Scout Trooper helmets on April 26, 2021.
In February 2022, Lego announced that it will release the LEGO 75327 Luke Skywalker (Red Five) , LEGO 75328 The Mandalorian and LEGO 75343 Dark Trooper helmets on March 1, 2022.
In January 2023, Lego announced that it will release the LEGO 75351 Princess Leia (Boushh) , LEGO 75349 Captain Rex and LEGO 75350 Clone Commander Cody helmets on March 1, 2023.
R2D2
Lego design master Kurt Kristiansen had unveiled the R2-D2 (set number: LEGO 75308 ). Kurt Kristiansen explained: “Well, R2-D2 is a bit of fun for me, because I have been revising the design for almost ten years,” and continued: “So it was quite a challenge to reinvent the model. " A new R2D2 model will be released in 2024
Imperial Probe Droid
The designer video for Imperial Probe Droid (set number: LEGO 75306 ) explains some of the challenges involved in creating the robot model. Lego designer Jan Neergaard Olesen explained: "It's the first model I've made completely in 3D, we have a program that we use and this was the first model where I spent a lot of time building in 3D at home," and continued: "But the thing is, in 3D programs you don't have gravity and with a model like this, which has a very high pivot point, it's going to present some challenges."
Diorama collection
In 2022, Lego announced that it will release three Diorama building sets from the Star Wars universe on March 24, 2022. They are Death Star Trench Run Diorama , Dagobah Jedi Training Diorama and Death Star Trash Compactor Diorama .
In 2023, Lego announced that it will release two Diorama building sets from the Star Wars universe on May 1, 2023. They are Emperor's Throne Room and Endor Speeder Chase.
Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama (set number: LEGO 40658) will be released in September 2023 in October 2023. The set consists of 282 parts with 5 minifigures. The set included Lego minifigures of Rey, Finn, Chewbacca, BB-8 and Porg.

LEGO has since released 20 Star Wars themed sets under the Lego BrickHeadz theme. They include characters from the sequel trilogy, the original trilogy, and The Mandalorian.
LEGO Brick Sketches sets
LEGO Brick Sketches set from StarWars are: 40391 First Order Stormtrooper and 40431 BB-8 have been released as part of the Lego Brick Sketches theme.
At-At's from LEGO
Since the moment it first stumbled across the icy plains of Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back, the fearsome Imperial All-Terrain Armored Transport (or AT-AT) has left an indelible impression on moviegoers – and, even more relevant, Star Wars fans – the whole world. It's no wonder why the AT-AT is a staple of LEGO Star Wars, having been rolled out time and time again on almost every scale imaginable. And it's all led to the brand new Ultimate Collector Series version, which blows away every previous version of the Imperial Walker in size, piece count and ambition.
Perhaps one of the most iconic vehicles in Star Wars history – along with the Millennium Falcon, X-wing and TIE Fighter – the AT-AT stands as an imitable symbol of the Empire's military might. And in 1980, when Star Wars hype was through the roof (not for the last time), it was one of the first images to greet audiences in a post-Episode IV landscape.
That early debut in the first Star Wars sequel helped cement the AT-AT in the minds of moviegoers, but it wouldn't have been the same without the walker's intimidating physical presence. Towering high above the snowy ground below, the AT-AT was designed “as much for psychological effect” as for tactical advantage – at least according to the Star Wars Databank – and that feels obvious just looking at the massive, mechanical quadruped.
Recreating these qualities in LEGO form is no small feat, but so far most brick-built walkers released since 2003's 4483 AT-AT have been surprisingly successful at capturing the vehicle's imposing character. The price point established for playset scale AT-ATs over the past twenty years has proven to be near perfect at delivering a model usable for LEGO Snowspeeders (with a little imagination), without breaking the bank.
If you're interested in completely blowing your LEGO budget on a single, monstrous AT-AT, it sounds like the rumored UCS version will be able to fill that gap. But in doing so, he must overcome the other inherent challenge of designing a LEGO AT-AT: ensuring it can stand on all fours and support the weight of its enormous body and head.
This is not such a big problem for the approximately 1,200 walkers. But when you increase the number of parts to almost 7,000 pieces, as with 75313 AT-AT, things get much trickier – and indeed stability is widely considered the main obstacle for any UCS AT-AT, which explains why it takes more than twenty years before the first one hits the shelves. Fortunately, it's a problem that the LEGO Group has managed to solve for 75313 AT-AT...
