This year we are releasing the LEGO Icons Eldorado Fort, a set that pays tribute to the original LEGO Pirates theme from the 80s. This theme was especially special because it was a way for many children to explore new worlds. Fighting in the living room, going on a treasure hunt, defending the fortress and experiencing adventures on the high seas: the pirate world was at your feet!
To celebrate the return of this set, we thought it would be a fun idea to look back with you on some classic themes from our past.

THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THEMES
In 1978, the LEGO Group came up with a new idea. We would release collections of sets designed around specific worlds.
Before these themes existed, we made individual LEGO sets that were not directly related to each other. So themes were a new way to group sets so builders could create larger worlds with them.
Initially there were three: Space, Castle and Town.
To introduce characters to these themes and provide more opportunities for creative play, the LEGO minifigure as we know it today was created. Initially there were 20 different characters with interchangeable body parts and fixed facial expressions, including knights, doctors and an astronaut – which brings us straight to our first set.
TO THE MOON AND BACK
With great achievements such as the first man in space and the first man on the moon, the whole world was captivated by space travel in the 1960s and 1970s.
Against the background of this zeitgeist, the LEGO Space theme was released.
It started with spaceships, moon bases, rockets and rovers, all inspired by existing technology. Over time, this was also expanded into science fiction, with new groups such as M-Tron, Blacktron and the Space Police.
In 2022, we launched an anniversary edition of the classic LEGO Galaxy Explorer, a new interpretation of an unforgettable set from 1979. This 1,246-piece set includes four astronauts, their robotic assistant and a space rover. The spaceship itself has an opening cockpit with seating for all astronauts, a living area with beds, computers and storage space.
Whether you want to relive the building experience of the original set or immerse yourself in sci-fi, this set will undoubtedly make you feel like you're on cloud nine.
SWORDS, SHIELDS AND SORCERRY
The LEGO Castle theme started with one set: a yellow castle with a garrison of knights, some horses made from LEGO bricks and an assortment of coats of arms.
But the theme soon expanded and various groups emerged, including the Black Falcons, Forestmen, Wolfpack, Dragon Masters and more, each with their own characters and storylines.
However, the vintage LEGO Castle theme was not only about the past: there was also a lot of looking ahead and new directions were taken. For example, the ghost was the first non-human LEGO minifigure and the blue wizard Majisto was the first minifigure with its own name.
In honor of this popular theme, we've released the LEGO Lion Knights Castle as a new interpretation of the theme for the future. This set contains approximately 4,500 parts and no fewer than 22 minifigures, including a queen, knights, archers, wizards and forest dwellers. With its hidden corridors, movable walls and secret hiding places, this castle guarantees thousands of adventures and endless play possibilities.
MONKEYS, SHARKS AND SKELETONS
Although this theme was not part of the first series, we quickly opted for LEGO Pirates.
In 1989 it was the turn of the LEGO Pirates theme and it was all hands on deck with galleons flying pirate flags, pirates burying captured treasure on deserted islands and the constant skirmishes between the rambunctious pirates and the orderly Imperial forces.
The battle was initially between Governor Breekijzer and the one-legged, one-eyed and one-handed Captain Redbeard. Dozens of more characters and sets were added over the years.
To honor this popular theme, we're releasing a brand new Pirates set. The LEGO Icons Eldorado Fort is based on the 1989 Eldorado Fortress set and includes cannons and a platoon of Imperial soldiers standing guard.
Our pirates will of course have to do everything they can if they want to get their hands on the hidden gold, but cunning pirates always find a way...
