LEGO JWST James Webb Space Telescope Satellite

Launched on Christmas Day 2021, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is the world's groundbreaking new space telescope, a collaboration between NASA, ESA and CSA.

JWST is so large that it had to be "folded" to fit inside the rocket and "unfolded" after being launched into space. Like the real JWST, this LEGO JWST model folds into a storage position for launch, features all major moving parts and is approximately to minifigure scale.

I am an astronomer and am amazed by the complexity of JWST. There are so many moving parts and systems that all have to work together to make the telescope work. I wanted to build a model to help others appreciate this incredible machine. I hope this LEGO set will help builders and students around the world understand the remarkable engineering used to create this enormous space telescope and learn the basics of how a telescope works.

This replica models JWST's curved primary mirror, consisting of 18 movable hexagonal segments, as well as the hinged secondary mirror. All major subsystems of JWST are included, including the science instruments and the propulsion, power and communications subsystems. This model 'unfolds' just like the real thing, so builders can see how this telescope transforms after it's launched into space.
