The end of the LEGO SigFig

It was already clear during the Skaerbaek Fan Weekend 2023, now it's official: in the future, fans and collectors of LEGO Minifigure Business Cards (SigFig for short) will have a much harder time getting their hands on the coveted and sometimes expensive collectibles. . It has been a tradition for years among fans to exchange business card minifigures when meeting a LEGO employee.

These figures had the employee's name on the front of the torso, and the email address and phone number were usually on the back. In return, the interviewees received their own SigFig, printed with the logo of the LEGO fan group (for example with the PROMOBRICKS logo), the name and the like.

Last year there was a lot of outrage and a request or demand to stop making and distributing your own SigFigs due to trademark rights.

Statement from LEGO

Allen from The Brick Fan, a LEGO-approved LEGO fan media from the US, recently published an official statement from the Danish toy manufacturer on this topic. Accordingly, for now, only members of the owning family and the LEGO Executive Leadership Team (i.e. just top management, so to speak) will have individual SigFigs. However, there is a possibility that LEGO staff could come up with something new to continue the tradition of SigFig trading in a different form.

Here is the statement in the original wording:

“We recognize the culture of fan swapping and minifigure swapping with employees. We recently made a change that employee minifigure business cards are for the active owner family and ELT. We could see a new culture develop for other LEGO employees and departments, but with this change just happening, we don't know what the future holds.”

More than 300 LEGO SigFigs in the collection

By the way, the photos here in this article show part of the LEGO SigFig collection of the Dane Jesper Andersen, whom I met during the Fan Weekend in Skaerbaek. He has amassed over 300 different LEGO Minifigure business cards in his collection so far.

It started about seven years ago with what, from today's perspective, was a happy coincidence. He received a bag with about 100 LEGO SigFigs as a gift from his boss, who had a lot to do with the LEGO company at work, but could do nothing about the 'business cards'.

Unfortunately, a good overview is lacking

The beginning of a great passion for collecting, especially given the interesting achievements of recent years. Some of these figures are traded among collectors for several hundred euros (and more). And as he told me at the Skaerbaek exhibition, there are considerably more figures than are currently in his collection. He estimates the number at 500 to 600 different Sigfigs. However, because there is no good overview of the figures issued, this does not make collection any easier.
