A tour of the LEGOĀ® Icons The Lord of the Rings : Barad-dĆ»rā„¢ set

When the Fellowship of the Ring left Rivendellā„¢, they began a journey that would take them deep into the heart of Mordorā„¢. On their way to Mount Doom, they would pass through perhaps the most intimidating place in all of Middle-earth, the fortress of Barad-dĆ»rā„¢, home to the Dark Lord Sauronā„¢

Like the Fellowship, we first visited Rivendell, and now we set sail for Mordor ourselves with the new LEGOĀ® Icons: The Lord of the Rings : Barad-dĆ»r set.

The set features over 5,000 pieces and is packed with authentic details, exclusive minifigures and surprises that fans will love. To find out more, we caught up with set designer Antica Bracanov, the go-to person to work on this set.

In other design projects, the challenge is usually to recreate something we all know with LEGO bricks, but that wasnā€™t the case here. For this set, I basically had to act as an architect or the Mordor equivalent of an interior designer!

Antica and her team approached the project logically, always asking themselves what you would expect in the Dark Lord's fortress.

"We have a forge where the orcs make their shields, swords and helmets, and a prison where there is a cage that can move up and down. Above that is an orc dining room, with a very messy table full of cups and bones."

The higher in the fortress you go, the closer you are to the Dark Lord himself.

"One floor up there is a throne room with a map of Middle-earth and a palantĆr. The palantĆr is a new element, containing an image of what it sees."

One minifigure to rule them all

The Lord of the Rings is known for its iconic locations, including Rivendell and Barad-dƻr, but they would be nothing without the characters who live there. Which minifigures come with this set?

"The main character was Sauron," Antica said. "He's exclusive to this model, and we also made a new helmet that looks absolutely amazing. Then we have the Mouth of Sauron and Gothmog, and orcs with two different designs."

But it's not all bad guys. Antica and the team have also added some light to balance out all that darkness.

"We wanted to provide some contrast and additional storylines, so we also added some good characters: Frodoā„¢, Sam and Gollum. We know they never got close to the fortress in the story, but they were on their way to Mount Doom and had to get past the Eye of Sauron."

CONCLUSION

The Lord of the Rings is a classic tale of good versus evil, and fans usually side with the Fellowship.

With this in mind, we asked Antica what she thinks fans will think of the set.

She didn't even have to think about her answer...

ā€œEveryone will love the set!ā€
